Newell on free versus free-to-play and Team Fortress 2

"The most recent thing that also is really puzzling is that we made products available for free on numerous occasions, without significantly impacting the audience size. We recently said, 'We're now going to do something different, we're not only going to signal that it's free but we're going to say it's free to play,' which is not really a pricing signal, even though that's what you would ordinarily think it is. And our user base for our first product that we made free to play, Team Fortress 2, increased by a factor of five. That doesn't make sense if you're trying to think of it purely as a pricing phenomenon."

"Why is free and free-to-play so different? Well then you have to start thinking about how value creation actually occurs, and what it is that people are valuing, and what the statement that something is free to play implies about the future value of the experience that they're going to have."

"And then the conversion rate, when we talk to partners who do free-to-play, a lot of people see about a 2 to 3% conversion rate of the people in their audience who actually buy something, and then with Team Fortress 2, which looks more like Arkham Asylum in terms of the user profile and the content, we see about a 20 to 30% conversion rate of people who are playing those games who buy something."

"So that's a fairly surprising and fairly recent statistic, which is that there seems to be something about the content that significantly changes how your monetization occurs, with apparently much broader participation than you would see out of something like FarmVille."

"We don't understand what's going on. All we know is we're going to keep running these experiments to try and understand better what it is that our customers are telling us... It's just an exciting time but also a very troubling time."

Newell on videogame piracy

One thing that we have learned is that piracy is not a pricing issue. It's a service issue. The easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting antipiracy technology to work. It's by giving those people a service that's better than what they're receiving from the pirates. For example, Russia. You say, 'Oh, we're going to enter Russia,' people say, 'You're doomed, they'll pirate everything in Russia.' Russia now outside of Germany is our largest continental European market... the people who are telling you that Russians pirate everything are the people who wait six months to localize their product into Russia. So that, as far as we're concerned, is asked and answered. It doesn't take much in terms of providing a better service to make pirates a non-issue."

Valve's Gabe Newell Describes the Transforming Economic Model of the Videogame Industry

Valve's Gabe Newell recently spoke at the Washington Technology Industry Association's TechNW conference in Seattle, going in-depth about the transforming economic model of the videogame industry. From piracy to free-to-play to secret pricing experiments on Steam, Newell was surprisingly open, admitting that there are numerous factors impacting how and why customers spend money on videogames that publishers and distriubtors, Valve included, simply don't understand yet.

4 Ways That Battlefield 3′s Beta Changed The Game

47 billion shots fired, 2.2 billion regenerated health, 19 million lost dog tags, 1.5 billion kills. But Battlefield 3′s raging beta wasn’t just about those numbers, and a little sly marketing to boot, game developers DICE actually used the experience to tweak the way the game works online.

Posted on the official blog for the game today, the team says they made hundreds of changes and additions based on the experiences everyone had during the game’s beta. Here’s the four they decided to highlight:

Improved Squad Functionality
There will be improved squad functionality in the retail game (including but not limited to): the ability to create squads prior to launching into a game, sticking with your squad when joining a game and continuing together through future games (if team balance on the server allows it), inviting friends to a squad, and changing squads once in game.

More Accessible Settings Menu
The ability to modify your settings via the deploy screen has been added into the retail game.

Improved Kill Cam
In the Open Beta, the Kill Cam would sometimes behave erratically. This has been fixed for the launch of the retail game.

Netcode Optimisation
The netcode is one of the many things that we tested as part of the Open Beta and it was not necessarily reflective of the final retail game. The DICE team appreciates, and has heard, the feedback you’ve provided and is further optimising online play.

Is This The Most Suggestive 3DS Game There Is?

The bar is high. There’s already Senran Kagura, a game about ninjas with big boobs, made explicitly to show jiggling jigglies in 3D. So far, that’s the watermark. Enter a new challenger.

The game is Onnanoko to Misshitsu ni Itara ○○shichau Kamo Shiranai (“If I Were Locked in a Room with a Girl, I Might BLANK”). It’s a locked room game, and the object is to get out. And stare.

According to Famitsu, the game is divided between the real world and the dream world. The real world is set during a school festival, and the goal is get a girl to go out with you. In the dream world, you’re locked in a room with a girl, and you both try to escape.

As with most locked rooms, there’s a puzzle solving element to getting out. Players are also, Famitsu reports, able to check out the girls from various angles. Perhaps, “If I Were Locked in a Room with a Girl, I’d LEER” might be a better title?

These Guys Make Assembling A Skyrim Statue Look Cool

Game shop employees here are assembling a “Dovahkiin” statue that will promote sales of Skyrim.

For those of us who’ve never worked in retail, this is a novelty! It’s like seeing how the magician does his tricks. Neat.

Latest Articles for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Collector's Edition)

I was a bad, bad man. Or should I say, Argonian? At a recent hands-on session with Skyrim I elected to play as "that lizard race" ... and I wanted to be as evil as possible. Although the race is designed primarily for thieves and stealth-based characters, I was interested to see how it would fare as a Mage. More specifically, a Necromancer. Turns out it's a pretty good combination.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Collector's Edition)

The Empire of Tamriel is on the edge. The High King of Skyrim has been murdered. Alliances form as claims to the throne are made. In the midst of this conflict, a far more dangerous, ancient evil is awakened. Dragons, long lost to the passages of the Elder Scrolls, have returned to Tamriel. The future of Skyrim, even the Empire itself, hangs in the balance as they wait for the prophesized Dragonborn to come; a hero born with the power of The Voice, and the only one who can stand amongst the dragons.

The Collector's Edition of Skyrim includes an Alduin statue, an official art book, and a Making of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim DVD.

Disney-branded Facebook games coming in 2012, Playdom head says

Can we all just say, “finally?” During a panel named “The Rise of Social Games” at the f8 Facebook Developers Conference in San Francisco, Disney Interactive and Playdom head John Pleasants revealed that two to four Facebook games surrounding Disney xd brands will hit Facebook in 2012. The general topic of the panel was the fact that branded social games are taking off.

Pleasants was joined on the panel by Kabam CEO Kevin Chou, EA Interactive head Barry Cottle and Zynga CBO Owen Van Natta. Facebook director of games partnerships Sean Ryan moderated the panel with the preface that branded games will take over the Facebook platform. And he might be right: EA just released The Sims Social, Zynga will soon re-brand its new Adventure World with Indiana Jones and Kabam recently announced The Godfather: Five Families.

Playdom, which Disney acquired in July 2010 for a whopping $740 million, is ahead of the pack with two branded games on Facebook: ESPNU College Town and ESPN Sports Bar & Grill. Both games performed well, thanks to advertising through the ESPN TV network. While Disney owns the ESPN brand, notice how neither of those actually involve the insanely popular Disney characters we’ve come to love.

Honestly, we’re surprised this didn’t happen sooner. Consider this: Disney has its own cable TV channel through which it could, in theory, advertise whatever it wants. Pleasants didn’t get into why it’s taken this long for disney channel games to throw its cast of characters into Facebook games, but did reveal the power of the Disney name.

Gnome Town, which Playdom launched in the summer–and we enjoyed quite a bit–peaked at 530,000 daily players. But just plopping the Disney logo on top of the existing one made users more likely to spend in the game just through trust of the company’s name, according to Pleasants. “We think it’s an advantage, if you put game play first,” Pleasants said.

It’s comforting to hear this emphasized by these developers. (Kabam’s Chou shared the same sentiment.) Branded games on Facebook are OK in my book, but the last thing anyone wants to see is the genre become a branding machine.

My Indispensable Dependency

Have you ever played something called a video game? its a new form of digital entertainment, apparently its kicking up quite a storm and developing quite a following on twitter. I was inadvertently bitten by the gaming bug early on in childhood, during what i like to call the good old days. Back when i used to play pong, pitfall and tetris while everyone else had a NES (nintendo entertainment system) i played games occasionally, but only in places like wedding venues or pubs on those huge cabinet arcade machines. It was a time when i still retained my innocence and you could do anything you wanted and nobody would seem to care because you were a child after all, when i still believed in santa and the world was all smiles and rainbows.

My dad didn't see the logic in spending a lot of money on a useless games console... and i agreed, the only use they have is to increase the amount of procrastinating a person can do to its maximum levels, while simultaneously increasing the amount of fat content in your body, interlaced with a decrease in social relation abilities. As it happened, my dad was actually a keen "car booter" almost every sunday he would wake up at around 5am to drive to a cold, wet, muddy, horrible field next to some farm which had just recently carpeted the green green grass with manure, sometimes i would be unfortunate enough to be awake and thus be dragged along too. Often we would bring home seemingly useless items to clutter up the living room and garage. Soon enough one day, one glorious day he had the good fortune to grab a bargin sega master system. After that day gaming stopped being a novel little hobby and became a passion destined to be cemented into my soul and being for all eternity.

Despite how much i love gaming, the game industry, writing about games, watching videos about games etc etc etc, i consider it to be more of a curse than blessing, after all games to have a tendency to burn though any funds you have quicker than prunes go though patrick moore. I dont regret any of my decisions however, games have certainly provided a hell of a lot of good times on those otherwise boring weekday evenings, its true i could have well... gone out and actually met other people, maybe i would have learned to speak english properly if i did... but i never would have saved world over and over again from aliens, killer robots, viruses and other digital demons. Who needs real people anyway when i have all the virtual friends ill ever need right on my television. (does this sound pathetic?) As i got older and started to earn my own money, i obviously bought even more games and committed even more time to them.

Japan Relief and N4G

Hey, N4Gers! A rather serious post for you here, though one I think we can all tackle with vigor. The devastation in Japan is difficult for most of us to imagine, but what we have seen and heard makes us want to help however we can. For most of us, so far from the disaster, we won't ever feel like we can do enough.

Below you will find a list of organizations that are active in Japan disaster relief. We aren't advocating any of these charities over another, but have sought to provide you with a respectable list - please do your own research so you can give responsibly!

We, N4G, have donated $3000 to MSF (Medicins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders) on behalf of the N4G community. MSF currently has several teams in Northern Japan, with more teams on the way. Their doctors, nurses and support staff work alongside the Japanese disaster authorities to provide aid in the wake of the earthquakes and tsunami.

This St. Paddy's Day Throw one Back with Slam Bolt Scrappers

Slam Bolt Scrappers is one of those games that is just plain likable. While at a show like GDC I'm often asked for my favorite game, a question that's usually difficult to answer. There are games that show potential, games that intrigue, games that are striking but we never get to try hands on - and then there are games that you walk half a mile away from the convention for so that you can meet up in borrowed office space to play for over an hour jeopardizing your timely arrival to the next appointment.

Like so many indie titles Slam Bolt Scrappers is full of unassuming charm, from plump flying demons to an assortment of hats to tossing blocks into a cannon that fires on the enemy. When you first join a game it's easy to feel overwhelmed by everything that's happening onscreen, but after you punch a few colorful flying beasties into blocks you find yourself building a tower, Tetris-style, creating turrets and defenses that can stand up to a giant snow-wielding robot.

So why is it perfect for St. Patrick's Day? For one thing, Beverage Mode. With a playful nod to accessibility, it is possible to play Slam Bolt Scrappers one-handed. When playing with Fire Hose Games' Fire Chief, Eitan Glinert, I strongly recommend having him play in this mode - and attempt to get him extremely drunk - you don't have a chance otherwise.

More than being tailor-made for imbibing green beer, Slam Bolt Scrappers is just the sort of raucous, trash-talking, on the couch and in your face style game that you should be entertaining your friends with on St. Patrick's Day. Sharing more than comparable initials with Super Smash Bros., SBS has the same furious and fun gameplay that makes it an ideal party game. Should the drunken opposition transform from barroom brawling into inebriated camaraderie belting out songs of the homeland, switch from versus to four player co-op and battle a giant robot with the Angry Drunk in your group tasked with griefing the opposition. Remember: what strategy can't solve, punching often does.

The co-op effort is markedly different from versus, and the variety of levels in the game make each battle unique. Adding to the wacky are power-ups that you pick up from punching those lumpy flying demons into a useful pulp – like the Crowbar, a powerful thief power-up that lets you steal an enemy block but makes you vulnerable, the Comet (a dash attack), and the Shield (invincibility). Since you’re pretty vincible the rest of the time, death happens, and when it does there are QTE style button sequences that – when completed successfully – reduce respawn time. With more than a dozen stages and four difficulty settings it's an easily scaleable experience and by using your partygoers to your own advantage there's a good chance you'll make significant progress on all those characters to unlock, hats to earn - and Trophies to win - this St. Patrick's Day.

Slam Bolt Scrappers is all about building, brawling, furious battles and frenzied co-op rounds. Already a favorite with Penny Arcade, Slam Bolt Scrappers hit PSN yesterday, so save your change from the Guinness run.

Casual gamers are not destroying gaming, they're helping gaming!

I am so sick off the "Hardcore Gamers" complaining about Facebook games and motion control games and every game in the "Casual Games" genre. Well as a Golden Age Gamer I thought I'd shed some light on the subject while staring at my display case filled with retro consoles and reminisce on some of the things I'm bringing up.

Let me take you on a trip back through time to the time of the PlayStation. Golden Age Gamers like me hated the new gamers it was bring into gaming and all the new genres being brought in, but we were content since we were still getting the games we loved. Fast forward to the dawn of what some of the Golden Age Gamers called the "SIN BOX" aka Xbox where gaming started on it's dark path toward creating most of you today, the "Hardcore Gamers" and the dawn of realism in games. We were outraged by the arrival of the jocks and average people coming into the nerd mecca that was gaming. Gaming was losing it's touch and more games targeting the new "Hardcore" audience were flooding the market and games about anything were disappearing for more realistic "Hardcore" games, and we were pissed at first but as time progressed we learned to live with them for one reason and one reason alone... the games targeted at us became even greater then we thought they could be.

Yes thanks to you "Hardcore Gamers" games targeted at "Golden Age Gamers" became fantastic and kept getting better. Let's look at Final Fantasy for a minute and also SHUT UP I know you hate it for do decent reason. Final Fantasy's visuals have gotten so much better thanks to your money buying games increasing the amount of money coming into the industry. Thanks to YOUR MONEY Final Fantasy XIII looks as magnificent as it does(even though everything else in the game is sub par but that's another post to write). You've obviously seen the first party Nintendo games quality haven't you? That again is YOUR MONEY making the games look as good and fun as they are.

My point is YOUR MONEY helped the games industry and helped make our games great. Now see what us "Golden Age Gamers" have done? Sure we still complain about the "Hardcore's" being the main focus of game companies today but when we get our games we remember what you guys did for us. Now you guys are the ones whinging about the "Casual Gamers" ruining gaming like we did when you first came into gaming. Their money will do to your games what your money did to our games. Also they are spending more money then us on their games thanks to micro transaction so more money for the industry is coming from them now, *psst* don't tell them!

Also I only found out about Golden Age Gamers a short while ago and I'm shocked I never knew about it. So the groups are Golden Age, Hardcore and Casual if you like the segregation.

Spam vs Sharing

Sometimes I really wonder about the normal media junkie out there. Believe it or not, sometimes, users do things to help a community and instead of getting a thank you, someone from the media or professional bloggest (as we shall call them) decides that they think your work is not as important as theirs.

Where is the fine line between treat others as you want to be treated compared to simple hate towards another person because they have a different definition of what you consider good news, blogs, interviews, and reviews?

Will it ever end?

Let the reader decide. If you don't like the article, just walk away.

I find it amazing that even your own blog can be seen as spam. How can something you post on your blog be treated as such. It is simply getting what YOU think is important into words and sharing it with others.

Official Defnition: : a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer; also : the contents of such a site

Yes, as I knew it would be, someone already has reported my latest blog as Spam.

Well, thanks for that. Appreciate you taking time to simply report someone trying to give something cool back to our gaming community. I know you probably meant no ill intentions, but it is just another check mark I have against people take the easy path of rejection over simply being civil.

Back to my simple life of being a soldier!

First Person Shooter Round Up

2011 looks to be year of the FPS and I like First Person Shooters as readers of my tweets and blog will know - so it should be a good year for me. This little post is my round up of the FPS in my world and on my radar at the moment. So in no particular order:

Call of Duty: Black Ops

Its had its problems and patches and now it has its DLC. My relationship with Black Ops (Slack Ops) has been a little cyclic to say the least - in the first few days it was full on fun then the problems started to materialise. Lag and hit detection seemed to be a big issue, assuming you could even get into a game! A few patches later and suddenly I couldn't get enough I have since been round the ranks 3 times, levelling up is still an addictive process in COD for me. 3 times might not sound like much but I don't get that much gaming time in.

The new weapons and perks in this game have kept it fresh and I still learn new ways to play everytime. The RCXD, decoy grenades and explosive tip crossbow have been super fun and I should really get around to downloading that First Strike DLC to play some new maps.

Unfortunately for Black Ops my time is now being spent on KillZone 3.

KillZone 3

Wow! I love this multiplayer and have gotten into KZ3 way more than I did KZ2 (even though I bought all the map packs). The class system is limiting for COD fans but when you look at the COD classes they are fundamentaly just different guns; with KillZone 3 each class has unique attributes that actually change the way you play and the way the other team will have to play against you.

The maps at first seem huge but when you realise you need space for your drones to fly around and jet packs to lift off you quickly realise that the air space is getting full and you need to find somewhere to hide.

I could go on all day about this game - but for now my fave moment was running from one end of Turbine Concourse to the other while disguised to assassinate the enemy target without one single shot being fired at me. Each class has its own merits and have a very real role to play in each battle. This is THE best FPS around at the moment.

HomeFront

I can't say much about this currently as the game only arrived yesterday and I have fired it up for about 15 minutes. More feedback from me over the weekend (if i can turn Killzone 3 off). The reviews have been less than favourable and I herad that THQ's stock value dropped by 20+% as a result.

Crysis 2

For me Crysis 2 was always going to about the single player campaign first and secondly it would have been fun to play some Multiplayer in New York. recent news of the demo being pulled for some connectivity issues is damaging to this game ahead of its immenent release.

I think I will be waiting for either the demo to be fixed to make my own mind up, or if the game gets excellent reviews then my interest may grow again. Problem is that Brink is out in May and this promises to be a game changer!

Brink

Splashdamage are breaking the mould with their MINGLE Player game (Multi/Single player mix) and the SMART technology for free running around the maps. Brink looks exciting and innovative and looks like as well as taking on the critics with its genre defining (or should that be genre refining?) ideas it is also not taking itself seriously with OTT characateurs and comic book like graphics.

Can't wait!

BattleField 3

Ooh - now this is exciting. DICE have been working hard over the last few years with Battlefield Bad Company and Medal Of Honor. Both had great Multiplayers - I am still playing BFBC2 occassionally and the support for that community continues. So far we have only seen a few single player videos of BF3 but it looks amazing and the new Frostbite 2.0 Engine seems to have improved the destructable environments to a much higher level. The action looks tense and very realistic set in modern warzones, much like Medal Of Honor.

Medal Of Honor

I really enjoyed this game but no-one else I know did! Simple as that so I sold it along with my old Call of Duty titles a few months back. The campaign was OK, some good thought gone in to some missions (the sniping was awesome fun) and great action. It was short and not very difficult.

BattleField Bad Company 2

I still play this from time to time, but I fear its getting close to being put on ebay. KillZone3, Homefront (possibly), Black Ops (occassionally) and Brink (hopefully) all mean that I can't see me finding the time to play this game.

The large maps and awesome sound make this a must for all to try. Maybe I will play it some more - as I haven't really got stuck into the Vietnam add-on and I still haven't learnt to fly one of those bloody helicopters!

Chinese Couple Sells All Three Kids to Play Online Games

A young Chinese couple has sold all three of their children in exchange for money to play online Nick jr games at Internet cafes, reports a southern Chinese newspaper.

According to Sanxiang City News, the couple met in an Internet cafe back in 2007 and bonded over their obsession with online video games.  A year later, the parents — who are both under 21 — welcomed their first child, a son.  Days after his birth, they left him home alone while they went to play online agame at an Internet cafe 30 km away.

In 2009, Li Lin and Li Juan welcomed their second child, a baby girl, and came up with the idea to sell her for money to fund their online game obsession.  They did so, receiving RMB 3,000 (less than $500), which they spent entirely shortly after.  The couple then proceeded to sell their first child and got 10 times as much for him — RMB 30,000, or about $4600.

Upon having their third child — another boy — the parents followed in their previous footsteps and also got RMB 30,000 for him.

They were finally turned into authorities when Li Lin’s mother found out what her son and his girlfriend had done.

When asked if they missed their children, the parents answered, “We don’t want to raise them, we just want to sell them for some money.”

Sanxiang City Newsreports the couple didn’t know they were breaking the law.

What's worst, COD fanboys or COD haters?

Gamers despise COD fanboys almost as much if not more than console fanboys. I know I can't personally stand hearing someone utter that oh so provoking phrase, "It looks just like Call of Duty". However I am starting to notice that anti COD gamers can be just as annoying as the actual COD fanboys. Here are a few examples.

Yesterday I decided to get back into Killzone 2 because a few of my friends wanted to party up. Personally, it takes me a while to hop back into any online game. Killzone 2 is special because I always have to adapt to the controls every time I play. One of my friends was in a clan and he became frustrated when we started to lose in warzone. He told me over the Mic, "Go back to Call of Duty". That is pretty simple statement but alot of depth behind it simply because I hear it said to people quite often. When somone isn't as good as you in any online game. When someone isn't really good at all in a certain online multiplayer game; It does not mean they play too much call of duty. There are some famous examples of course such as my experiences with Killzone 3 and Crysis 2, but not everyone who struggles at any
point during any online match plays too much Call of Duty. That is a very ignorant statement.

More recently, over the past few days I looked at just about every article on N4G relating to MW3. I didn't even bother looking at the article as my eyes went straight towards the comments and with predictable results. Anyone supporting call of duty got several disagrees. Anyone bashing Call of Duty got several agrees. Seriously, fanboys are extremely annoying but not everybody who likes and plays call of duty is a fanboy.Honestly, Battlefield fanboys are making a rise when it comes to fanboys. In the articles I see relating to call of duty, the people posting remarks such as BF3>MW3 or any other kind of diss are always there in packs.

One of the biggest things we gamers hate about call of duty fanboys is when they bash other shooters for either being too similar to call of duty or being too different from call of
duty. But when we have anti call of duty gamers bashing anyone who likes Call of Duty does that really make them any better? When people assume that anyone isn't that good in a certain game because they play too much call of duty does that make it any better?

We gamers can purchase and play whatever we want. Sure there are better games out there. Sure there are beautiful worlds to explore, innovation to expand, and fun to be had; But at the end of the day, it is just a matter of opinion and opinions clash as false factual information when these pointless debates begin.

That is pretty simple statement but alot of depth behind it simply because I hear it said to people quite often.

A Tale of 2 Analog Sticks

Its important to learn from our mistakes. Its better to learn from mistakes without making all new ones. As i patiently await my Vita preorder (don't judge me), i can't help but look back on what went wrong for my old friend, and on what pitfalls my new one must navigate.

The troubles of the PSP have been well documented. For a compendium of reasons, the very promising launch of this console did not translate into a smooth ride that Sony were accustomed to hardware-wise. Software droughts, console price, piracy, developer support, over-priced ports and a slew of other reasons made the life of this console a turbulent one.

However, while sony was able to resurrect the fortunes of their handheld in Japan and to a lesser extent, in Europe, they capitulated to an irreversible flatline in the North American market. Why then did they fail to phoenix down their way out of troubles in this region?

The gaming world was a far different place when the PSP was being designed and launched. The ecosystem thrived with diversity in the form of platformers, adventure games, and obscure titles in the way of “Mr Mosquito” and “Katamari.” To launch a console with a single analog stick was in no way unprecedented and in fact had great historical success. The dreamcast entertained the heck out of millions just a few years before (myself included)with a single stick. Surely, a handheld console could do the same. Why then did it become such an insurmountable factor?

Much of it, in my opinion, had to do with the explosion of online multiplayer and concomitantly, the FPS an TPS genres. The demographic being targeted had fallen head over heels with the genres and success could not be had without a generous serving of spacemarine mayhem. I looked on in dismay as studios traditionally charged with producing pure platforming goodness on the PS2 jumped genres, admittedly, in spectacular style on the PS3.

That shift however, could not be replicated on the PSP. The single analog stick precluded the fast and frantic nature of the genres, and the software lineup was never able to capture its intended market. Nintendo managed to escape this by having a console that was priced at a wider market, and by virtue of their years of experience in software development for handhelds.

Many of sony’s offerings simply did not suit the platform. I’ll give an example here. I love the patapon series, but have you ever tried playing it in public or on a bus? It’s hell. It’s no wonder that most users opted to use their PSPs at home. The games that I managed to play in public were mainly jrpgs, where you had to pay less attention to the gaming environment and which were slower in pacing.

The point is that while those 2 analog sticks and other input options are great, software needs to be made that can actually be played on the go. So while titles like uncharted are welcome, it’s important not to lose sight of simpler games such as Angry birds, locoroco and hammering hero, which are much more suited to gaming on the go.

Many gamers may scoff at the software lineup on phones and even on the DS, but these titles can actually be played in public, and are essential for mainstream success. I can name a few titles that I stopped playing in public because I could not follow WTF was going on in the plot and during cutscenes by virtue of environmental distractions. Variety is key, and I hope they don’t lose sight of that.

Whatever happened to fun?

To those of you reading this now who are older than the Playstation era that started with the PS1 in 1994, I ask the following questions.

Do you remember waking up as a little boy, hoping against hope your parents would let you play Super Mario Bros? Or whatever was your favorite game of the time.

Do you remember the weekends your parents would let you stay up until the wee hours of the morning, as you were lost in concentration on a new hit game you just couldn't put down?

Do you remember playing games before they had saves, and leaving your console on all night until you woke up the next day so that you wouldn't lose your place in the game after spending countless hours playing?

Those were the days weren't they? Back when you didn't care about how good a game looked, or if it had a deep story, or compelling characters, or perfect sound. It was just you and an addictive hobby which became a pastime for you.

Whatever happened to that? Why can't we just have fun with our games these days? Why does it always have to be an endless scrutiny of every single facet of the games design and content?

Look around on the internet at any gaming news site, and you will NEVER come across a thread that DOESN'T have ANY discussion about graphics, or sound, or character development, or game mechanics. If you take the time to read comments, you will hardly ever see any kind of variant on the phrase "Oh man, this game is so much fun." Even future titles are scrutinized based on screenshots and minute long trailers for graphical glitches and the like.

Whatever happened to throwing your controller at the tv in anger, but picking it right back up and trying again because you're lost in the zone?

I've said what I'm about to say in a recent comment but, nowadays gamers and critics remind me of any episode of Frasier. Critiquing every small nuance and detail of game. I'm surprised we actually don't have gamers and critics critiquing the actual discs the games come on.

"Well the rainbow pattern is rather dull, and the disc plane is not completely 2 dimensional, I'm going to have to mark the game down for this."

Whatever happened to playing games for fun? Yes, as we grow our palettes change, but our ability to have fun and play games for fun should not change at all. Sure we can have our gory horror games, but focus on that instead of "@#$% would you look at that screen tearing?! I can't enjoy this game now."

I don't know exactly how or when this sense of entitlement began, but for those of us who've been gaming since before it reared its ugly head, I say that gamers today are very spoiled and have thus forgotten the true purpose behind video games. That being that they are interactive ENTERTAINMENT!

If the things you focus on are graphics and glitches, I feel sorry for you.

Remember gamer guys and gals alike; it's all about having fun.
